Digital Loyalty Cards in Qatar: A Guide for Cafés, Salons and Retailers

Every loyalty programme is one of three things underneath: a stamp card, a points card, or a membership card. Picking the wrong one is the most common reason a programme launches, runs for four months, and quietly stops being mentioned.
Here is how to tell which one you are.
Stamp cards: for habits
Buy nine coffees, get the tenth free. The mechanic everyone recognises.
Stamp cards work when the purchase is frequent, small and roughly the same size every time. A flat white costs what a flat white costs, so counting visits is a fair proxy for counting money. Cafés, car washes, barbers, lunch spots, nail salons.
They work because the goal is visible and close. A customer with seven stamps is measurably more likely to come back than one with two — the reward feels within reach.
Where it goes wrong: setting the target too high. Ten is the reflex, but if someone visits fortnightly, ten stamps is five months of commitment for one free coffee. Six is often better. You lose a little margin per reward and gain customers who actually finish the card.
Points cards: for varying basket sizes
One point per riyal spent, redeem points against future purchases.
Points work when customers spend very different amounts. A restaurant where one table spends 80 QAR and the next spends 400. A retailer selling both accessories and appliances. Counting visits there would reward the wrong behaviour — the person buying a keyring gets the same credit as the person buying a fridge.
Points give you a lever stamps don't: you can change the rate. Double points on Sundays, triple on a slow month, bonus points on the product you are pushing.
Where it goes wrong: making the exchange rate too stingy to notice. If 100 QAR of spending earns a reward worth 1 QAR, customers do the arithmetic once and stop caring. Ask yourself whether you would change your behaviour for it.
Membership cards: for status and access
No counting at all. The card says who someone is — Gold, Platinum, Member since 2023 — and what they get for it.
Membership works for gyms, clubs, clinics, salons with a subscription, and anywhere the relationship is ongoing rather than transactional. The card is identity: it opens a door, proves a subscription is current, or unlocks a member price.
Where it goes wrong: tiers nobody can reach, or tiers that grant nothing. If Silver and Gold get the same treatment in practice, your customers will notice before you do.
The mistakes that sink programmes
Asking for too much at signup. Every field costs you customers. Name and phone number is enough to run a loyalty programme. Email address, date of birth, gender and home address is a survey, and people abandon surveys at a counter with a queue behind them.
Making staff the bottleneck. If adding a stamp takes six taps and a manager's PIN, it will not happen during a rush — which is exactly when your best customers are there. Whatever the counter flow is, it has to survive a busy Friday.
Launching without telling anyone. A loyalty programme nobody knows about is a database. A sign at the till, a line from staff at the point of payment, a QR code on the receipt.
Never looking at it. The one real advantage digital has over paper is that it tells you things. How many cards issued, how many customers came back, which branch, which reward. If you never open that, you have bought a more expensive stamp.
Why the wallet matters
You can run any of these three on paper or in an app. Putting them in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet changes two things.
The card is always there. No install, no login, no forgetting it at home. It sits beside the customer's boarding passes and payment cards.
The card is live. Balances update from your side, so the customer sees the truth rather than a snapshot from their last visit. You can also push a message to the card — a reward expiring, a new branch opening — without an app and without paying for SMS.
